ARTS 013: African-American Art History

Course Description

This course is a brief survey of the art of West African civilizations and the art of African Americans from colonial to contemporary time. It examines ways in which African American art has alternately reflected, shaped, and challenged such important historical events and currents as the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the Women’s movement, and contemporary identity politics.
