MUSC 004A: Music Theory Level 3

Course Description

This course builds upon the concepts from Music Theory Level 2, incorporating the study of advanced harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic materials, with emphasis on chromatic harmony, survey and analysis of musical styles, and period techniques. Through four-part writing and analysis of diatonic and chromatic chords, the course includes an introduction to chromatic harmony; secondary/applied chords; modulation; borrowed chords; chromatic pre-dominants; chromatic embellishing chords; as well as chromatic third relationships. Music majors are required to take MUSC 020C concurrent with this course. Non-majors are encouraged but not required to take MUSC 020C concurrent with this course. Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 31A/B Beginning Piano is strongly encouraged for all students.
